We were analysing increasing site activities over the Christmas 2008 period, looking at User trends and other such interesting statistics to think through our approach to further increasing traffic to the sites we host / develop. To have a million unique visits to our busier sites is quite awe inspiring. However, we have recently become aware of a report from an organisation called comScore who monitor Internet usage that puts our effort into perspective.
ComScore found that one billion (1,000,000,000 for we English types) users had visited web sites in the month of December alone - the highest number recorded to date. The split of usage by region was;
- Europe 28 % of overall user numbers
- Asia Pacific 41 % of overall user numbers
- North America 18 % of overall user numbers
A regular question we ask ourselves here at webree is ”how big is the Internet" ... once raised as a question at an interview we ran for a web developer position. In that case the answer was "Yeah, big, really big" ... not really that accurate from an unsuccesful candidate! Alternatively the IT Crowd represented the Internet in a black box, with a red light ... also (sadly) inaccurate.
Well here is a definitive answer, 1,000,000,000 users a month and growing!
